Thinking

Lately I've been doing some thinking. I've never had much of a problem being outgoing and generally happy about what life has to offer. However, when it comes down to my actions, I could use some pretty major self-improvement.

One of the pitfalls of having a steady positive attitude towards life is refusing to acknowledge that the negative things even exist. I'm a horrible procrastinator, yet throughout my years in school, I've found a way to get my work done. However, this issue has resulted in a living space that borders on uncivilized.

Certain events in my life lately have really made me consider things more deeply. It's very strongly related to the upcoming major transitions I'll be experiencing. Whether I'm ready or not, I graduate in June. Then I have the daunting task of figuring out where I'm going to work or even if I'm going to stay in Chicago.

Ultimately, I'm called this very moment to set into motion a course of events that will lead to a happy life. And yes, it lies in my hands. No pressure.

What's New?

Since I've bothered to post on here again, I might as well provide an update with what's new.

First of all, I'm finishing fall quarter of my final year of undergrad here at Northwestern. It's been a hectic quarter, but I think I'll make it through all in one piece. Football season came and went, as will basketball season, but it's been a heck of a good time doing my marketing thing for the 'Cats.

Last night our sports marketing people had an event at ESPNZone with some reps from Northwestern's corporate sponsors. It was a great time, and I got to mix and mingle with amazing people. Not only that, but I may have landed myself the opportunity to pick up and internship and sing the national anthem for a White Sox game, which would be kick-ass. More details to come...

Let's see, what else? I'm singing a lovely duet at my choir's holiday concert this weekend with a tremendously talented soprano grad student. Good times will be had by all.

This Sunday brought phenomenal temperatures to the Chicago area, topping 80 degrees! I got a chance to enjoy the weather with a nice walk by the lake. Lots of people taking advantage of the weather, since it's going to cool down again for the next week or so.

LONDON --You could say it's a bird of a different feather. Liverpool, plagued by pigeons that pollute the city center with their droppings, is introducing a mechanical falcon which squawks and flaps its wings in hopes of scaring the pesky birds away.

The fat pigeons, who feast on junk food, are an embarrassment to a city chosen to be next year's European Capital of Culture.

The city council is buying 10 Robops, short for robotic bird of prey, at a cost about $4,000 each. But cleaning teams spend many hours each day scraping droppings from streets and buildings at a cost of about $320,000 a year, the council said.

Debacle in the Outfield

I've watched countless baseball games both on TV and in person, however never have I ever before been able to grasp what it really means to be an outfielder until today. I played left field on my "white league" softball team, and I felt like I had a bullseye on me out there. Time after time, the ball was hit somewhere near me. The difficulty was not only associated with catching the ball. The hardest part was getting a read on where the heck the ball was headed. I misjudged a few balls hit out near me, thinking they weren't going as far as they were. Anyway, long story made not as long, I struggled out there today, and I'm not particularly eager to tackle that position again any time soon. Also, it's high time for me to get my own glove. A child's glove won't quite cut it for me anymore.

My apartment is messy. It would behoove me to clean it. I'll get around to it when I have more pressure to do so. In other news, it was a gorgeous day here in Evanston. The temperature must have been nearly 60 today. It's too bad the warming trend won't continue right away. It should still be tolerable, though.

I have plenty of work to do this week. Oh quarter system, why do you bless me so?

But "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters," the barely there film version of the late-night TV cartoon, is probably a lot funnier if you're under the influence of something -- even if it's just a high-octane mix of Red Bull and Cheetos.

A Losing Day

Well, there's not much more to say about this day, other than that it was filled with losses. My PMA/SAI softball team had its season opener today, and we seemed to be in good shape to wind up with a win. However, in the bottom of the 6th inning, our last inning, the opposing team scored two runs to win, 7-6. The outing showed promise for better fortune next week, and we should be able to rebound in style next week.

The Thrashers played their first ever playoff game tonight to the Rangers. They showed fight in the 3rd period, scoring a goal to come within a goal of New York. They couldn't manage to score the equalizer, and lost, 4-3. It's fortunate that the series a a best-of-seven. There's definitely the opportunity to change their fortune.

After seeing that the Thrashers lost, I figured that I'd see how the Braves were doing for a little boost. However, even they were on the losing side of things, trailing the Washington Nationals, 2-1, in the 9th inning. I saw them get out of a jam with the bases loaded and one out, so there was hope. It seemed like the perfect situation. Brian McCann was batting with runners on 1st and 2nd. He then struck out, which was followed by a walk of Jeff Francoeur. Scott Thorman came to the plate with the bases loaded. After he managed to bring the count full, he couldn't lay off a pitch that was low, and the game was over.

I wouldn't say the day was as depressing as Jim Larson's comment after the softball game, when he said the style of our loss was like the story of his life, but there was sadness. At least the weekend arrives tomorrow. Now we just need a heat wave.

Attention: Braves Fans

My beloved Braves are 7-1. I should be ecstatic. However, my enthusiasm is a bit held back because of the pathetic turnout the team drew to its last couple of games at Turner Field. Tuesday night's game drew 18,396 fans, which was a disappointment, for sure. But then Wednesday night's game was unacceptable. A grand total of 15,631 people were in attendance. You can't ask them to put a better team out on the field. They've got the best record in Major League Baseball.

I just don't understand. Maybe Atlanta is indifferent about the Braves. I prefer to blame the location of Turner Field. If it were in the suburbs, I bet the team would draw much bigger crowds. The truth of the matter is, downtown Atlanta is not prime real estate. The growth of Atlanta's suburbs in recent years has been remarkable, while the downtown area has only experienced marginal growth.

Maybe the weather was too cold. Maybe the city will become intrigued by this team. The troublesome part is, I find myself considering this problem every year. It's not a simple problem, so there isn't a simple solution. Not even a winning team seems to be enough.

Shifting gears, the Thrashers play their first ever home playoff game at Philips Arena on Thursday night against the Rangers. I hope to see Blueland show up to support their team! If I were back home, I'd be there for sure!

Mother Nature: Temptress

Today in Evanston we experienced the dreadful "mixed bag" of precipitation. It snowed, it rained, it was windy, and it was just plain nasty. Considering the amazing warm weather we had a couple of weeks ago, this day was an abrupt wake-up call. Although it's technically spring, winter isn't done with us yet.

First Softball Game

So, I joined a softball team with mostly voice majors, and we had our first game today. Unfortunately, we were on the losing side of the battle, losing 14-0, but it was the first time we had come together as a team, so I'm sure we'll have a better showing in our next outing. I went 1-for-2 today, getting our team's first hit with a single to left field in the 4th inning. I made it all the way to 3rd with 2 outs, but was sadly unable to score.

Much fun was had by all, and we look forward to doing some damage next week!

Mel Peachey Leaving?

So, the big buzz in the Playmania community has to do with Mel Peachey's announcement that she will be leaving GSN next week. On Saturday night's 100 Winners show, she said that she will be flying back to London in a week. Initially, she was only slated to remain in Los Angeles for a month to help launch Playmania. However, she's been here now nearly an entire year. So, I suppose it's time for her to go home.

The question that comes to mind now is whether or not this news is true. Fans of the British sensation are hoping that she made this announcement as an April Fool's joke. However, I don't think she would make that kind of joke, especially not without having cleared it up at the end of the evening's episode.

What also remains unclear is why she would be leaving. RDF Management, representing Mel, have not released any information about future projects involving the British presenter. The other possibility is that GSN has decided not to extend her contract with the station, although that seems quite unlikely because she was intended to be the host of 100 Winners from its launch in late February.

Mel seems to have nostalgic sentiments for her native United Kingdom, and it may just be that she wants to go home. While her future leads are unclear, she probably never intended to remain in Los Angeles for the long haul. She never invested in a car, choosing instead to participate in a mobile car rental program. It's the type of deal where you can drive different cars around, dropping them off at central stations. So, she made every effort to keep her ties here only minimally binding.

GSN is indeed hiring for new hosts, and has been for a little while now. Jessica York looks to continue to fill the position of temp host, especially through Shandi's run on Dancing with the Stars. The next couple of weeks will shed light on this situation.

Okay, Google has tricks up their sleeve, we all know that. But what's this business? Google TiSP supposedly provides free internet through a home kit that you just have to order from them. A part of the process involves flushing down your toilet. According to Google, they examine what's flushed down your toilet to help craft advertisement material. It seems like a giant hoax, but I guess it's actually legitimate. Needless to say, I'm going to be prowling around to see what I can dig up about this project.

This is clearly big news.

This post is dedicated to Hannah Peckham, the beautiful quiz show presenter of Quiznation in the UK. A large portion of the traffic that flows through this site comes from people searching for her, so I'll post a couple more video clips of her I've found.

Wikipedia informs me that she has been seeing her boyfriend Ian since 2004. I've also learned that she does voiceover work. You can even listen to some of her advertisement work in this montage (m3u format). According to her casting company, she has a voice that is cool, girl-next-door type, warm, sexy, and husky. I particular enjoy the husky quality to her voice.

There's a new dating site online that isn't like all the others. In fact, it's exclusive. That's right, even if you willingly offer to pay the $9.95/month to be included in their database, you could still be prevented from joining.

This site (HotEnough.org) evaluates prospective personals participants based on three photo submissions, one of which must be a full-body shot. The current members then must rate the applicant an 8.0/10.0 or better on looks, or "hotness." If it's agreed that you are indeed that hot, then you can join the posh social networking fun that beautiful people need without being held back by ugly folks.

Apply, and you'll have proof that you're then 10 you always knew you were, or at least an 8 or a 9.

It's official. Sanjaya will be a part of the next American Idol tour. He survived yet another elimination round, advancing to the final ten. To his credit, his performance on last night's show was better than any of his prior showings. However, I think everyone acknowledges that he doesn't belong in this competition, at least not at this stage.

I guess we'll see just how much farther he gets.

I'll be back in Chicago on Wednesday morning, after having spent a nice, relaxing few days back home in Atlanta. Tonight I watched American Idol, which was interesting as always. I just don't understand what their fascination with the crying girl was all about. Who was that?! She didn't really look like she was star-struck. I just thought she had issues. Anyway, Simon had the right idea after Sanjaya sang, when he said that the little girl summed up his reaction.

It's crazy. Meanwhile, Blake is still my favorite. I also like me some Melinda Doolittle.

Dancing with the Stars

Tonight I watched the debut of the new season of Dancing with the Stars on ABC. I have to say, I'm very excited about watching this season. I'm mostly interested because Shandi Finnessey will be participating. She happens to host Quiznation of GSN, so I'm wildly intrigued.

Also, there's a woman with a prosthetic leg on the show! You go, girl.

Shandi, of course, will be unstoppable!

Spring Resolutions

Since I'm not big into New Year's resolutions, I've decided to put mine off until the start of Spring! Given that the meteorological start to Spring is a short time away, I've thought of a couple of things that I want to accomplish in the new season.

First of all, I want to start going to the gym again. There was something liberating and fulfilling about the heavy exertion and getting drenched in sweat.

Secondly, I intend to actually get my apartment clean. Sure, I've had moments here and there where I've made the place decent, but I have no excuse not to take care of business and make it nice.

This third one may be the toughest, but it's equally important in my mind. I want to get on a somewhat conventional sleep schedule. I'm not talking about waking up at 7 am or anything. I'm just saying I want to keep my nights being awake past 3 am to a minimum. It's just a healthier way to live.

All that being said, I'm not too much the type to make resolutions. I just have some ideas for refining a few things.

I went out tonight to see the Thrashers play the Capitals back home in Atlanta. We had really good seats, and I managed to take a few pictures and get a couple of video clips. The Thrashers won 2-1 in OT. It was awesome!

ITV Play Returns

Any of my readers within the United States, which probably amounts to 90% of the traffic on this blog, will probably have no clue about the content of this post. For those of you in the UK, you will notice that the digital channel ITV Play has once again hit the airwaves. The channel was suspended internally for about a week, while an independent auditing company reviewed the procedures of the gaming.

Considering that I am indeed an enthusiast of participation TV, this development caught my attention. These channels in the UK have been scrutinized due to the long odds and their methods of taking calls. It's true that this method of gaming does take advantage of a portion of the demographic that can least afford to participate in these games. However, along those lines, the entertainment value of these games is also quite significant. I find that they're a great joy to watch, even online from another country, where I can't even participate.

As far as how best to proceed, I'd say ITV play would be well served to display on the screen the call volume and approximate odds of selection to play. They are doubtless being closely monitored in light of the controversy they've already generated because of such issues as puzzle obscurity.

Shifting gears to participation television in the United States, the GSN Playmania block is rocking right along. GSN has implemented a 10-entry limit per 2-hour show segment that prevents it from facing any serious threat in the gaming ethics department. Of course, the standards are different here than they are in the UK. Gaming ethics may indeed become a relevant issue should this format expand here. I have yet to encounter profit yield data on the GSN Playmania programming, but I'm quite interested to see what kind of overall response they're getting.
